Bichon Frise Grooming: 101

It's 5:30 in the morning and Melissa is calling. It's Sunday. I can sleep in on Sunday. Why is she calling? I am not pleased. I had the phone directly to Mike with a grunt of your sister. Now he isn't pleased either. Who the hell calls people at 5:30 a.m. on a SUNDAY.?!? He gives it back, I can't calm her down, you try. I groan.
Melissa called in a full blown panic because Riley had dry skin and it was grossing her out. She had tried doggie shampoos and had even went to her own hairdresser for a high end dandruff shampoo to try on the poor little pup. She was quite proud that the new shampoo even smelled like coconuts. Melissa, I wanted to scream, get a clue the dog doesn't care that it smells like coconuts! But really, I just wanted to go back to sleep. I took a deep breath and explained that it was the shampooing and the bathing that she was clearly doing too often that was causing the dry skin/dandruff epidemic that Riley was experiencing. Is every other day too often? she asked. Try a schedule like every other month, and you will be closer to what it should be. I replied.

I know to a germhater like yourself, that sounds really gross but Bichon Frises have oils in their skin and bathing them too often removes those oils. That is what is causing the dry skin condition. Your best bet is to brush him weekly with a strong bristle brush. Baby wipes can be used to wipe the coats down in between bathings if you absolutely have to clean him somehow. He won't mind not bathing though, he doesn't sweat like a human so it isn't near the big deal it would be if you stopped bathing for 2 months.
Melissa's reply? Oh. Wow. I should have known. I hung up and rolled over to pursue my lost dreams of the morning.
