Training Your Bichon Frise to Stay

When I wanted to work on training my Bichon Frise to Stay, I would call him to my side and ask him to sit. Once I gave him a reward for sitting, I had his full attention. At this time, I would ask him to Stay, count to two silently and then reward him again.
In order to achieve a Stay of several minutes, we had to work our way up to this in small increments of time. Every time I asked him to Stay, I would count a little higher and then reward him.
Once I had a reliable thirtysecond Stay, I started to increase the distance between my Bichon Frise and myself. This time when I told him to stay, I would move back onestep and then move onestep towards him and give him a treat.
Gradually we increased the duration and distance until I was several feet away and my Bichon Frise remained in his Stay position.
