Bringing the Baby Home

Today is the day the puppy comes home. It has been a whirlwind of activity to prepare for our Bichon Frise puppy. We have been running around the house looking for things that we don't want him to get any ideas about chewing on especially the cords to the lamps and things that he could either chew through or knock off. Either could be disastrous.
I have also moved all the glassware off of the shelving and tables that are at puppy height. I would hate to see any of them get broken, but even more important, I don't want any opportunities for my sweet baby to get hurt.
In addition, I have put all the cleaning supplies up and in a locked cupboard so they can't accidentally be left out where he can get into them during a moment of curiosity.
Because I am not sure of the names of all the houseplants that I have collected over the years, I cannot look online to see what ones of them may be toxic. I have given the majority of them away and moved the remainder to hangers or to the top of bookshelves to ensure the puppy can't chew on them.

Breeding Your Bichon Frise

Something that you need to know before you decide to become a breeder is that this will take more effort and more time than almost anything else that occupies your time.
If you believe that your Bichon Frise is of good breeding stock, you may be thinking of breeding your Bichon Frise. Be cautious because there are a lot of factors to consider before breeding.
Breeding your Bichon Frise for money is selfish. Bichon Frise don't need you to help keep the breed alive and well.
Understand that breeding your Bichon Frise can be rewarding as long as you stay responsible for your dog and the breed as a whole.

Brains and Brawn Work Together to Melt My Heart!

As the puppy runs tirelessly around the backyard I reflect on just how strong Bichon Frise puppies really are.
I always thought it was stupid how people acted like Bichon Frise puppies were little adults. But, as I watch the little rascal I can see how they would appear to be advanced for their age.
It's clear that he needs patience but yet constant supervision and interaction with me. Lots of praise seems to be working to get him to use the potty outside (thank goodness!) and he does the whole circling/sniffing thing which, if I'm watching him, I can recognize the signs and get him outside when he forgets to go to the door.
We are making some real progress. I find him completely enchanting!

Blue Ribbon Bichon Frise

The standards which are set for a blue ribbon Bichon Frise are very specific. You need to carefully review these specifics with your Bichon Frise in mind.
Not many Bichon Frises are blue ribbon. Your blue ribbon Bichon Frise will have had to have conformed to Bichon Frise standards almost perfectly.
The family tree of your Bichon Frise will be a major part of the blue ribbon. Does you Bichon Frise have a champion in the tree?
Having a blue ribbon Bichon Frise takes a lot of experience. Enjoy your Bichon Frise for himself and if you are rewarded with a blue ribbon you can just consider it icing on the cake.

Bichon Frise Training

Bichon Frise training is the same wether your dog is young or old or giant or even tiny. Dogs learn tasks in pretty much the same way
Logical coherence is what you need to follow when training your Bichon Frise. All dogs comprehend better as they learn to interpret your movements.
With Bichon Frise training, train until your dog has learned something he didn't know. Then reinforce his learning and build off of that.
Your Bichon Frise will be happy to learn what you want him to learn. What he doesn't want is to be bored. Over training on any one thing will make him bored and he won't pay attention as closely.

Bichon Frise Sitting

My mom agreed to watch my dog for me while I was out of town. I was so happy that my dog wouldn't be cooped up in a kennel the whole time, which is what would happen had I boarded her with our vet.
I left my mother specific instructions on how to take care of her and a list of emergency numbers. My mother laughed and said that I take better care her than a child. She laughed even more when I handed her a brochure that read: Emergency care for your Bichon Frise.
The brochure had the facility's number and location. It came in more than handy when my dog ran out the back door and was hit by a car while I was away.
My mom may have thought all of my precautions funny when I was leaving, but she thanked me later for leaving her completely prepared. It saved my dog's life!

Bichon Frise saved our Family Disaster

My family and I rented an RV for a week and set out for a much needed vacation. Unfortunately we spent the whole time trapped inside due to one unbelievable rainy day after another.
We decided to end the trip early and head home. We pulled into a gas station on the way and saw a little lady with a sign that read: Bichon Frise puppies for sale.
My son begged me to go over and look at them. How can you tell a boy no when he has just spent three days cooped up in an RV?
So, we looked and we fell in love. The Bichon Frise puppy made the whole miserable experience worth it and saved our trip.

Bichon Frise Rescue/Adoption

I adopted a rescue Bichon Frise from a local animal shelter in the hopes of finding a good pet. He was so lonely looking and timid, my heart went out to him and I took him home with me that very day.
It didn't take long for me to realize that my sweet rescue dog was afraid of nearly everything. He seemed to be untrained and when he was scared, he became aggressive.
After two years of rigorous training, I still couldn't let him off lead, he couldn't be trusted with children, men or other dogs. In the end, he did bite someone and I had to have him put to sleep.
I know that not all rescue Bichon Frises are going to be like the one that I chose to try and help. The situation definitely calls for more details concerning the Bichon Frises past and some deep consideration.

Bichon Frise Puppy Supplies

In preparation for my soon to be arriving Bichon Frise puppy, I took my chequebook and hit the pet supply store.
I never knew that there would be so many supplies for dogs! There were leashes, collars, toys and dinner bowls in every color and size imaginable. Since my new puppy was going to grow, I purchased an adjustable nylon collar and leash set in my favorite color.
I found stacks of crates in all sizes and piles of blankets in all colors and textures. I grabbed a few bags of mini training treats and was able to have a pet tag engraved with my contact info while I shopped.
When I returned home with my purchases, I flipped through the phone book and called the closest veterinarian to arrange for a microchip implant in my Bichon Frise puppy.
